According to OpenAI's own help center, the company is deprecating Atlas and moving browser-based agentic capabilities into ChatGPT and Codex, building on what it learned from Atlas to support a more capable browser experience in ChatGPT itself. The standalone app was scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026, after which point it may no longer open, browse, or support browser-based agentic workflows.

  • Many users preferred using ChatGPT directly via apps or web interfaces instead of adopting an entirely new browser.
  • Atlas was limited to macOS, with planned Windows and mobile versions never materializing.
  • High maintenance and security costs made Atlas less sustainable as a standalone product.

If you were an Atlas user, the practical takeaway is: the replacement today is the ChatGPT extension for Chrome plus the browser mode inside the ChatGPT desktop app. And if you saved anything important in Atlas itself, you needed to export or save that data — including bookmarks and pages — before the shutdown, because open tabs and browsing history did not transfer, and active login sessions could not move between browsers.

It's also genuinely cross-platform, which matters if you switch between a work laptop and a phone. The browser and its core agentic search, voice mode, and Deep Research features are free on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.

For citations and accuracy, Perplexity's underlying answer engine has an edge worth knowing about. Independent auditing found Perplexity's citation-failure rate at 37% — the lowest measured, against ChatGPT Search at 67% and Grok 3 at 94% — best in class, but still wrong on more than one citation in three. That's a useful reality check: even the best AI browser gets sources wrong a third of the time. Verify anything that matters.

The standout feature is Memory. Memory is the context layer — Dia pulls in details from your open tabs so the assistant remembers what you're working on across a session, and it's what makes cross-tab research feel coherent instead of stateless. It also has automatic tab organization — Tab Groups including auto-organized meeting tab groups — which is a genuinely nice quality-of-life touch if you're the kind of person who ends every day with forty open tabs.

The catch is platform availability. This is Dia's single biggest limitation: it's macOS-only, with no Windows, Linux, iOS, or Android version you can actually use today, though a Windows build is in development behind a waitlist. If you need the same browsing experience across a Mac and a PC, or on your phone, Dia simply isn't an option yet — pricing runs a free tier with limited AI usage and a Pro plan at $20/month for those who can use it.

Worth noting: The Browser Company was acquired by Atlassian, and the acquisition closed October 21, 2025, with Dia clearing an Atlassian security review by December 2025 — so this is no longer a scrappy independent project.

What can Claude for Chrome actually do?

Claude took a different route entirely — no standalone browser, just a genuinely capable extension. Claude for Chrome integrates Anthropic's Claude AI assistant directly into Google Chrome, operating as a side panel capable of viewing, reading, and interacting with web content in real time — clicking buttons, filling forms, navigating between pages, managing multiple tabs, and executing complex multi-step workflows.

It's genuinely useful for recurring browser-based grunt work. According to Anthropic's own documentation, the extension can work in several tabs at once gathered in its own tab group, schedule tasks that recur daily, weekly, monthly or annually, save fixed instructions as shortcuts called up with a forward slash, and read console logs, network requests and the structure of a page — that last part makes it handy for developers testing sites, not just casual browsing.

You can install it from the Chrome Web Store's Claude extension listing. Setup is simple: subscribe to any paid plan, install the extension, and sign in with your Claude credentials — the free tier of Claude doesn't unlock agent features here.

Take the permissions seriously. On installation the extension asks for 15 Chrome permissions, and the most important is debugger — with it, Claude really operates your browser, clicking, typing and taking screenshots. Anthropic itself is candid about the risk: Anthropic describes agentic browsing as "still risky."

Does Gemini in Chrome's auto browse compete with these?

Google took the "don't make people switch browsers" lesson to its natural conclusion — it just built the agent straight into Chrome itself, which already has the largest install base on the planet.

Chrome auto browse is a Gemini 3 capability that takes a goal in plain language and works through a multi-step task across tabs while you do something else, rolling out in preview in the United States to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers on Windows, macOS, and Chromebook Plus. Google has since expanded it — the Android version reached "select devices" by the end of June 2026.

Google's own framing of what it can do is fairly specific: Gemini can handle workflows like shopping on sites such as Etsy by searching items, adding them to a cart, applying discount codes, and preparing checkout based on constraints like budget or theme. Google is notably upfront about the guardrails here — more so than most competitors. Auto browse is designed to pause and explicitly ask for your confirmation before making a purchase or posting on social media, and it's built to keep you in the loop and ask for confirmation of sensitive actions.

What can agent mode actually do well right now?

Strip away the marketing and the genuinely useful agent-mode tasks across all these tools cluster around a few patterns:

  1. Price and product comparisons. Open three retailer tabs for the same item and ask the assistant to compare price, shipping, and return policy. This is the single most reliable agent task across every browser in this list.
  2. Form filling from a known source. Feeding in details from a PDF or a previous form and having the assistant replicate them into a new form — tax documents, job applications, insurance quotes.

The practical rule: use agent mode for research, comparisons, and form-filling on accounts that don't touch money. Keep a human hand on the wheel for anything involving payments, passwords, or sensitive personal data — every major vendor's own documentation says some version of the same thing.

Which AI browser fits your device and needs?

Here's the simple version, organized by what actually matters to most people:

  • You're on Windows and want something free and cross-platform: Comet. It's the only option here that's genuinely free across Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android with no waitlist.
  • You're on Mac and want the most polished, quiet AI browsing experience: Dia, as long as you don't need it on other devices too.
